Excerpt

Turning slowly to face him, I can see that his eyes are still closed, but his mouth is tipped up into a smile which radiates freedom. I’ve never seen him look so carefree. He looks as if his sins of the past are washing away with the punishing rain.
I know it’s not that simple, but through pain and loss, we have bonded together and gained strength. And that strength suddenly animates me to tell Quinn how I feel.
“Quinn!” I scream to be heard over the harsh rain.
My eyes are mere slits, as the rain is so heavy, but the moment Quinn opens his magnetic eyes, I see that he has changed. Something inside of Quinn has shifted, and it’s beautiful.
“Quinn, I—” I repeat, my teeth chattering from the cold, but also from what I’m about to confess.
“You what, Red?” he questions, running a hand through his wet hair.
Another thunderbolt sizzles through the sky, and I yelp. Charging into his arms, I slap my hands over his ears because I’m terrified. I want to him tell him how I feel, but I’m afraid. Droplets of rain cascade down his tender face, but he doesn’t stir to brush them away, and I know I have his undivided attention as his gaze never wavers from my face.
This is not the way I wanted to do this, but I know that for now, this will have to do.
“Quinn…I…I love you,” I whisper, my hands still sitting firmly over his ears.
Once I say those three little words, the tightening in my chest lessens, and a small smile tugs at my lips because I’ve never felt so boundless with a decision. And nothing has ever felt so right before.

Review:

Nick Hawthorne and the Banefires of AutumnNick Hawthorne and the Banefires of Autumn by Craig Booker
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A friend of mine recommended this book to me, as she knew I loved Young Adult Fantasy. I'm glad she did, because I LOVED it!

Nick Hawthorne is a normal fifteen year old teen. I liked him a lot. He is full of himself, as teens tend to be and a bit angst-y. But when he becomes involved in a dangerous quest in a parallel world called Albion, Nick finds out that monsters are real and he's braver than he thought.

I started to read this book and was quickly hooked. The story is told from several points of view, although Nick is the main character. Sir Benedict Harkness is a fabulous character. He is a father figure to young Nick and takes him under his wing. Eyes of The Wind is Sir Benedict's brother, who is also known as The Rider, and is enigmatic and stoic, but incredibly brave. I liked this character too. I really liked Steel and Feydeau; they have completely different temperaments, but are fast friends. And they, along with Sir Benedict, Gwyn ap-Rhys (the Dodman) and Eyes of The Wind make up a team that strongly reminded me of the motley crew of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Lord of The Rings'. There are several other characters that have a cameo in the story, such as the hermit Crystaljack, and the foxy (literally) Bracken-le-Rose, not to mention Harlequin, but they all left an impression on me and had me wondering if I would see them again.

The character development is wonderful; I felt like I knew them all, even the scary and deadly witch, Nightshade - who doesn't make an appearance until late in the book - but whose presence is felt all the way throughout the story. The world development of Albion is wonderful too. The author gave it a medieval feeling to it, with it's horses, wagons and fire torches; I loved it! There is plenty of action, danger and adventure, which kept me turning the pages. However, I did find some of the words the author used (correctly I may add) an odd choice. I have an extensive vocabulary, but even I had to look up a couple of words that are actually old English in origin and are not widely in use today. But, in a way, these old words gave the story an authenticity and originality that is missing from today's fantasy novels.
The final showdown between Nick and Nightshade is a little anti-climatic (or so I felt) after a huge battle scene between Eyes of The Wind and the Ilnure (Nightshade's familiar), but it left me wanting to read the next book in the series as soon as possible to find out what happens next!

Craig Booker has written a fantastic debut young adult fantasy. The author blends English myths and legends, cultural history and fantasy in such a way, it sucks a reader in. I love his fast paced writing style, but found some of the story did not flow as well as it could have, due to abrupt changes, or slower flow, in scenes. There is one scene which seems to slow the story down a bit too much in my opinion; this scene is where Sir Benedict visits his home and he finds a magickal book. I understand the importance of this scene, but the slower pace it portrayed threw the story off it's pace. Other readers may not feel the same way, so I will leave it to them to decide for themselves. This is an author to watch, and I will follow his career with interest.

I highly recommend this book to teens aged 14 and above, and to adults who love reading YA Fantasy. - Lynn Worton

Author Interview:

1. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Probably when I first read Lord of the Rings - I was around 10 years old! I bought book 3 first as it was the only one in the newsagents, and read it in a week. Then I went and bought the full trilogy in a single volume, and read it all. I was astounded at the world Tolkien had created, and wanted to try and do the same. But differently, if you follow...

2. How long does it take you to write a book?

Let’s say around a year, give or take. If I could write full time I’d be a lot faster.

3. What do you think makes a great story?

Realistic characterisation and conflict, plus, fast-moving entertaining stuff with lots of unexpected twists and turns.

4. What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

I can only write when I’m not at work – at my real job, that is. I’m best starting around 9am and working till lunch, then I’ll review and possibly polish what I wrote earlier. But I can and will write when the muse strikes. Always carry a notepad and pen with you!

5. How do you balance family and writing?

I have a very small family circle, so it’s probably easier than for most authors. My wife works some evenings and weekends, which helps – when she’s around we’ll do things together.

6. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

For the fantasy stuff it’s easy. I have a very overactive imagination. Plus, I decided to base the ‘Albion Chronicles’ trilogy on a mythical land peopled by characters and creatures drawn from British folklore and folksong, and there is plenty of source material out there. As a musician with one foot in the ‘folk’ camp, I’m also very familiar with loads of traditional song lyrics. As regards the ‘Impossibilities’ (impossible crime) stories, it’s purely my imagination at work – and keeping eyes and ears open. You never know what you might come across to inspire the next solution to a locked room murder!

7. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your book/s?

How my characters take on lives of their own. They sometimes say and do the most surprising things.

8. How many books have you written? Which is your favourite?

I have no favourites. They’re all my children. How can you choose a favourite child? Sorry, does that sound weird?

9. Are your characters based on anyone you know?

Never consciously, though when I was a child and a teen I read comics - sorry, graphic novels - voraciously. Some of the artwork in them may have permeated my subconscious. I realised when I created ‘The Eyes of the Wind’ that (in my mind at least) he looked like the splash panel character from an old DC magazine, a representation of Jack o’Lantern.

10. Do you have a favourite place you love to write?

At my dining room table. Honestly.

11. How hard is it to get published?

If you want to make a go of it and go down the traditional route (hardback/paperback with an established publisher) it’s bloody hard. So is getting an agent (something I never managed). But if you’re more easily satisfied, it’s never been easier to publish yourself electronically.

12. What do your family and friends think about your books?

Hard to say! My family and friends don’t tend to read the genres in which I write. But I think they’re proud. And clever. They might be telling me what I want to hear.

13. What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I love travelling to far-off places, the more exotic the better. I also play keyboards and guitars with my band Tyburn (‘rock music with a folk edge’). I’m passionate about films and tv too – there’s never been a better selection of movies or programmes to choose from! I’m also into photography. And I must say I enjoy spending as much time as possible with my wife.

14. Do you have any suggestions to help aspiring writers better themselves and their craft? If so, what are they?

Don’t give up. Always find time to write. Subscribe to Writers’ News and buy a copy of the Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook. Read as much as you can, especially in the genre in which you wish to write.

15. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

When I was around 5 years old I wanted to be a train driver. But you must understand that when I was that age, steam trains were still all the rage, and I was fascinated by the sheer size and power of them.

16. What are your favourite books and which authors inspire you?

Fantasy – Tolkien, Alan Garner, Susan Cooper, Michael Moorcock. Impossible crimes – John Dickson Carr – of course!

17. For an aspiring writer what do you feel are certain do's and don’ts for getting their material published?

Do – send your work only when you feel it’s ready (first drafts rarely are); work and work and work on your synopsis; research the publishers interested in your genre and only send your work to them; send exactly what your prospective publisher asks for, no more and no less (it’s no use sending a ten page synopsis when they ask for two). Don’ts – don’t pester a publisher unnecessarily when you’ve submitted to them; and don’t expect fame and fortune!

18. What are you working on now?

I’m polishing book 2 of ‘The Albion Chronicles’, ‘Nick Hawthorne and the Crossbones of Winter’. I’m also two-thirds of the way through book 3, ‘Nick Hawthorne and the Deepdark of Spring’. And, just to keep things fresh, I’m making copious notes for a new trilogy/quadrilogy for when I finish ‘The Albion Chronicles’. All very exciting stuff, and just a few the reasons why it’s absolutely awesome to be an author!

About the Author:

Craig Booker grew up in Ecclesfield, a village which borders Sheffield in the north of England. His first novel - a handwritten full-length science fantasy work whose title he's long since forgotten - was submitted to a national newspaper competition when he was only 14 years old. Sadly, it failed to win, but that didn't deter him - it's hard to quash a major passion! Since those formative times he's had two volumes of locked-room mystery murders published (the 'Impossibilities' books - one story, 'Spindleshanks', was nominated for a Pushcart Prize), but his main literary obsession has always been with the fantasy genre. His work echoes worlds created by Alan Garner, Susan Cooper and Rick Riordan - worlds connected to ours by mythology and folklore - but he's also a huge fan of JRR Tolkien, Robert Jordan and Terry Brooks.
Now he's at the beginning of a new literary journey with Knox Robinson, who've signed him up to publish a fantasy trilogy, 'The Albion Chronicles', over the coming years. The first of these, 'Nick Hawthorne and the Banefires of Autumn', will be published on 8 July 2014. Expect crossover worlds, magick, flawed heroes, villains more forces of nature than tyrannical despots, some of the nastier creatures from folklore - and a fifteen year old protagonist totally out of his depth! Folklore really does bite back...
Craig's also a keen musician and songwriter, currently playing keyboards and guitars with folk/rock outfit 'Tyburn'. His other interests include exotic travel and (obviously!) reading. He's just taken up photography, too.
He currently lives in Handsworth, Sheffield, and is happily married to Andrea.

Excerpt

Cavanaugh began swimming back towards her and the resolve she had mustered crumbled again. She trembled on the brink of casting aside all the rules and swimming with him. Part of her demanded she seized this moment with him, before he was taken from her again, but the rest warned that it would only make things worse. Giving herself to him again now would make seeing him with other females unbearable. The knowledge that he could again take something precious and special and treat it as if it was nothing would destroy her.
His gaze swung her way and his expression suddenly went cold.
“Eloise!” He shoved out of the water, spraying it everywhere and startling her.
He rushed across the wet rocks, his footing sure as he sprinted towards her, leaping with agile grace from one boulder to the next, his muscles working hard as he closed the distance between them.
Her eyes widened and she turned slowly, her heart thundering against her breast and cold prickles crawling over the nape of her neck.
She wasn’t alone.
Her eyes met the huge tiger’s ones as it stalked towards her from the edge of the forest, already close enough to pounce.
Her breath hitched and stuck in her throat.
Cavanaugh appeared between her and the tiger. His left hand clamped down on her waist and he pushed her behind him, shielding her with his big body.
He roared at the tiger and silver-grey fur rippled over his powerful shoulders.
His hand flexed against her hip, a silent warning to her, telling her not to move. She kept still, pulse racing at a dizzying pace, her blood running cold in her veins.
Beyond him, the tiger hunkered down, preparing to attack.
Eloise’s heart leaped up to join her breath, lodging in her throat and refusing to come down. Fear blasted through her, the thought that Cavanaugh might have to fight the wild cat turning her blood to ice and filling her with a desperate need to do something in order to protect him. She was powerless though. No match for the beast. It wouldn’t back down if she faced it. It would sense her weakness and attack.
Only Cavanaugh was strong enough to face the animal and make it leave.
The tiger growled, flashing long yellowing canines.
Cavanaugh snarled back at it. She could sense his desire to shift. It ran through her too, but it would be a grave mistake to give in to it. She was bigger in her human form and appeared far more like a threat to the tiger, and so was Cavanaugh. His hand trembled against her hip, cold from the water but filling her with comforting heat. Cavanaugh was strong. A king of beasts.
He could convince the tiger to leave them. She had to believe it, because she couldn’t bear thinking about the other path things might take.
She couldn’t think about Cavanaugh fighting.
It took her back five years, to a night she would never forget and one she didn’t want to remember.
The sound of flesh striking flesh. The scent of blood on the cold air. The anguished bellow. The snow painted crimson. It all whirled in her mind, cranking up her fear, sending her heart into overdrive as she fought for air and to escape the nightmarish vision.
Cavanaugh’s grip on her hip increased, driving away the gruesome vision but not her fear.
She stared up at the back of his head, fighting her need to touch him to reassure herself that he was fine and her need to do something to drive the beast away so he would remain that way.
He breathed hard, his eyes never leaving the tiger. The beast didn’t take its eyes off Cavanaugh either. They stared at each other across the expanse of muddy rocky ground for what felt like hours to her, a silent standoff between two powerful predators. She couldn’t take it. The air was too thick for her to breathe as she waited. She couldn’t get it down into her lungs.
The tiger snarled.
Cavanaugh roared, the sound echoing around the forest and the mountains that rose above it.
Her heart stopped dead when the tiger went lower and she felt sure that it would pounce and Cavanaugh would have to fight it. She grabbed his arm, on the verge of pulling him out of danger.
The big cat turned and slinked back into the forest.
Her heart plunged into her stomach.
“Are you alri—”
Cavanaugh cut her off by turning on his heel and dragging her into his arms, against his damp chest. He wrapped his arms around her, steel bands that bordered on squeezing the air she had managed to get down into her lungs back out of them again.
She wasn’t sure what to think when he pressed his cheek to the side of her head and cupped the back of it with one hand, tunnelling his fingers into the loose waves of her dark hair. She told herself not to do it, but ended up closing her eyes, pressing her hands to his stomach and resting her cheek against his chest, listening to his heart as it pounded against her ear and thundered against her palms.
He was shaking.
“You okay?” he whispered, his lips brushing her forehead.
She nodded, her voice nowhere to be found, driven away by the feel of his arms around her and how tightly he was holding her, as if he had been on the verge of losing something precious to him.
Gods, how she wanted to believe that.
It was all make believe though, a fantasy created by her mind as it interpreted how he had reacted and how he held her.
Wasn’t it?
He pulled away before she could answer that question, casually rubbing the back of his neck. Water dripped from his silver-white hair and rolled down his cheeks, cascading past bright eyes of purest silver. They caught and held her, stirring her feelings back to the surface, the intensity of them making her deeply aware of him—his strength, his power, his dark allure.
She was as lost in him as she had been a decade ago, snared by the spell he cast by focusing with such intensity on her, making her feel as if she was the only other person in his universe.
“Didn’t have problems like that back in London.” He smiled but she saw straight through it.
The tiger had shaken him.
She wouldn’t mention it. She would pretend she hadn’t seen it. He was being strong and so was she, because all she really wanted to do was hold him and reassure herself that he was fine.
He was safe.
His smile faltered, turned strained, and he muttered to himself as he crossed the short span of earth to his backpack and clothes.
He grabbed his t-shirt from inside his fleece and she stared at his chest, at the scars that slashed across them. The sight of them transported her back five years again, to that night when she had felt she had been on the verge of dying. Seeing him fight Stellan that night had almost killed her.
“What’s wrong?” Cavanaugh lowered the t-shirt to his side and approached her, every inch of him tensed and alert, and concern warming his grey eyes. “Is it the tiger?”
She shook her head and let the words tumble from her lips. “I was so frightened when you fought.”
Without thinking, she stroked her fingers across his chest, following the marks that marred his pale skin. They had been so deep at the time, a wound that had forced him to shift back into his human form. They had bled badly, crimson pumping from the three slashes, spilling down his bare stomach and painting the snow. Her hand shook against him, hot tears rising even though she tried to hold them back.
The air thickened and he breathed hard, his intense gaze heating her inside, making her burn at a thousand degrees and ache to lift her eyes to his. She wanted to see that hunger in his eyes again, the heat that she had seen in them before.
The desire.
“Eloise,” he husked, his voice scraping over gravel, stoking her need for him to a startling level, one that had her on the verge of surrendering to it.
Gods, she wanted to surrender to it.
She couldn’t put herself through that much pain again though.
She pulled herself together, snatched her hand back and lowered her head. “I’m sorry.”
“Fuck this shit.” He shoved away from her, swiped his clothes from on top of his backpack and bundled them up in his arms as he strode away from her.
Eloise could only stare at him as he threw his clothes down on the ground around twenty metres from her, on the other side of the camp. He shoved his wet trunks down his legs, leaving him completely bare, and then tugged his dark grey trousers on. Anger laced his scent, born of frustration rather than the adrenaline rush of facing the tiger. He was angry with her. He seemed to be taking it out on his clothes too. She was surprised his boots didn’t split apart at the seams as he pulled them open with force before shoving his feet into them.
She didn’t understand him.
Since the day he had become the pride alpha ten years ago, he hadn’t looked at her once, and he had been gone for five years. He had walked out of her life without as much as a backwards glance. He had made it clear that she had meant nothing to him and what had happened between them had been little more than hormones at play, a need he hadn’t been able to deny.
But since she had walked into the nightclub, he hadn’t taken his eyes off her, and the way he kept acting around her was taking her back beyond those ten years, to a point when they had been closer.
To a time when they had been together.
When the world hadn’t been a dark place, because he had filled it with light.
He paused and looked across the narrow stretch of land that divided them, his grey eyes dark with the hunger she had wanted to see in them again for what felt like forever, the heat that she feared because it awakened something within her too.
Need.
Desire.
Hunger that consumed her.
It was still a three day trek to the village if the weather stayed as it was.
Gods help her but she wasn’t sure she would make it.
No.
She was sure.
She wouldn’t make it.
She was a moth drawn to his flame and it was only a matter of time before he set her on fire and had her burning so hot that it reduced her control to ashes.

New maid Dorcy Edwards flees the scene of where her employer's body is found. His murder sparks a chain of macabre events. See No Evil My Pretty LadySee No Evil My Pretty Lady by Miss Mae
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am a fan of Miss Mae's work after listening to Ahoy Gum Drop on audio book. When I found out that she had a who-dun-it also on audio, I was intrigued and downloaded a copy. I am glad I did, because I LOVED it!

The story is narrated by Marcus Hyde. He did an impressive job in bringing this story and characters to life. His speaking voice was clear and concise and his interpretation of the characters mannerisms and affectations came across strongly. His villain's voice sent shiver's down my spine! I don't think I would like to meet that character in a dark alley!

Dorcy Edwards is a wonderful character. I liked her very much She is a young lady who has only recently been employed as a kitchen maid to Mr. Davenport. After finding him murdered, she flees the house and finds herself thrown into a maelstrom of mystery, suspense and danger. Oh, and a hint of romance!

This is a relatively short story, lasting only four hours and thirty-four minutes, but there is a lot happening in that time! It is packed with suspense, mystery and danger, with the glimmer of a chance at romance for the main character. This story is set in London, during the time of Jack The Ripper in 1888. The story is told from the point of view of Dorcy Edwards. There are several interesting characters in this intriguing tale. Mr. & Mrs. Butterfield, the couple who sponsored Dorcy when she first arrived in London. Mr. Garath Davenport - the son of the murdered man - who makes Dorcy's heart flutter, but he has secrets of his own. Can she trust him? And Alice, another maid from Mr. Davenport's house.
This is an excellent who-dun-it. The plot is wonderfully described in such detail. I could picture the scenes with clarity. I loved the way the story unfolded. The story is full of twists and turns, with red herrings aplenty. Suspicion and fear makes Dorcy unsure who to trust, which makes the reader feel the same way. I had no clue as who attacked Dorcy for quite a while, but I took an educated guess before the culprit was finally identified. I am glad that my deductive reasoning proved correct; I would have been completely shocked if I had guessed wrongly. But, the author certainly knows how to keep the suspense and mystery going! I reached the end of the book and felt sad that it wasn't just a little bit longer. However, it only made me want to read more of this author's books in future.

Miss Mae has written a wonderful mystery. I love her writing style, which is fast paced and exciting, and the flow is wonderful. I am a huge fan of mystery novels, and one of my favourite authors in this genre is Agatha Christie. However, Miss Mae is an author that I will be keeping an eye on in the future.

I highly recommend this book to young readers who love mystery and suspense, and to adults who love a classic who-dun-it and are looking for a quick, but highly entertaining read. - Lynn Worton
