Stealing LightStealing Light by Julie Cassar
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

This is a wonderful paranormal romantic suspense novel. I really enjoyed it!

Cecelia Walker is a character that really got under my skin. I wanted to like her - in fact I did in the beginning - but as the story unfolded I found myself being annoyed by her. I think it was her whiny "why me" attitude that got me in the end. This doesn't normally happen to me, its usually the other way around. I found myself rolling my eyes and hoping that the bad guys would "steal her light" and get it over with. However, this is my opinion and other readers may not have such uncharitable thoughts about the main protagonist. Maybe if I had read it on a different day I would have had a different reaction. Who knows?

So, you're wondering why the four stars: This is because I really did enjoy the story. I enjoyed meeting the various characters who came alive on the page and was quickly drawn into the story, which is told through CeeCee's eyes. Though this book has a darker theme than the author's YA/Teen Ruby Blue series, it has the warmth and humour that is the signature writing style of the author. I loved meeting CeeCee's friend Elliot who, though she is only in a few scenes, has an amazing energy that jumped off the page. I also liked meeting Aaron, I will not say much about him as I don't want to give spoilers and Cash made my heart skitter.

This story is full of shadows and suspense, which kept me hooked. The mystery of the shadowy figures and their sudden appearance in CeeCee's life sent shivers up my spine. When something is later revealed, it clarified a suspicion I had about them. However, I will not say anything more in case I accidentally give a spoiler. There are a few twists I didn't see coming and danger from a fallen angel bent on stealing CeeCee's light. Zacharael is a brooding presence for the most part and only makes an appearance later in the book, but his evil intent pervades the story from the beginning.

I reached the end of the book with mixed feelings. I struggled with my unusual dislike of CeeCee, though felt happy at how the story wrapped up. Whether this is a stand-alone or the start of a new series, time will tell. However, if there is another book I will definitely consider reading it.

Julie Cassar is one of my favourite authors, and I will read any of her books in the future. Her characters are very lifelike and virtually leap off the page. I also love her fast paced writing style, which seems to flow effortlessly from scene to scene. I am in awe of her talent.

Although there are scenes of a sexual nature, they are not explicit and fade out, so if you are looking for something a little more racy, this book may not be for you. However, I highly recommend this book if you love new adult paranormal romances. - Lynn Worton

Series Promo: Talon by Gigi Sedlmayer @GigiSedlmayer

Today, I am pleased to host Gigi Sedlmayer on my blog and her Talon series.

This is a series aimed at children (though adults could read this too), and follows the adventures of a girl called Matica, aged nine, who is living in a remote village in the Andes of Peru with her missionary/teacher parents and her young brother. Matica was born with a growth disability. Her body doesn't grow very much and, even though she is nine years old, she has the body of a two or three year old. This makes the villagers a little uncomfortable and they shun her for the most part. This doesn't seem to stop Matica from boldly exploring the hills and valleys surrounding the village, though it does make her feel a little lonely. It is during one of these adventures she comes across a pair of condors, whom she befriends and calls Tamo and Tima. Condors are huge vultures and are not particularly pretty, though Tamo and Tima are intelligent and know they can call on Matica when they need help. This begins the adventure for the first book, Talon, Come Fly With Me.

Talon, Come Fly With Me (Book 1):

Synopsis:

Nine year old Matica lives in a remote village on a dry plateau in the Andes of Peru. She moved to Peru when she was five with Australian missionary and schoolteacher parents. Because Matica is trapped in the body of a two year old, her growth handicap has caused her to be rejected by the local people and they would not accept her into their community or allow her to play with the children.

With patience and a sense of adventure Matica befriends a pair of condors. A strong bond and love develops between them.

Matica rescues the egg the condors, Tamo and Tima, are trying to protect from poachers and nurtures it to hatching. The egg hatches on her 10th birthday and she names the new fledging Talon.

Many adventures unfold, including her finally being accepted into the local community. And something totally unexpected...

This is the beginning of many incredible adventures with Talon and Matica. It is a story of hope, determination and love.

Add to Goodreads

Talon, On The Wing (Book 2):

What Matica has dreamed ever since she first befriended the condors is actually happening.
And now the adventures begin.

Finally accepting Matica into their community because of an incredible event, the people from the village love seeing her with Talon and demand she tell them about her adventures with the condors.

Matica is now happy to be small because she can do what she has always dreamed of – fly. She is accepted and loved, and because she is so small can have incredible adventures with her beloved Talon. In the meantime, her friendship with Amos continues to grow...
In this book, she has scores of adventures and near disasters with Talon.

Talon, Flight for Life (Book 3):

Synopsis:

Matica and her family are planning a holiday in Australia. She and her father travel to Cajamarca to organise supplies and air tickets. Although she misses her condors on the walk to the city, she sees wondrous scenery, rainforest, animals and birds.

On their walk, disaster strikes. Her father is seriously injured on the way home after being bitten by a huge spider and contracts a high fever. Not knowing what to do, Matica calls to her condors for help. The wait until they arrive is the hardest thing she has ever had to endure.

Journey with Matica through her adventures, laughter and tears. Enjoy the feeling of friendship, love and camaraderie between Matica and her condors, Talon, Tamo and Tima.

Talon, Connected (Book 4):

Synopsis:

TALON, CONNECTED is the fourth book of the epic adventure series TALON.

Matica lives in the small village of Pucara with her brother, mom and dad, who is recovering from a near-death experience. Her 11th birthday is coming up and the things she is about to encounter proves she is very brave.
Events take a sudden turn when she is invited to see Elcano, the very old and frail father of the village elder Pajaro. Not once, but three times he summons her. She is afraid of him but he fascinates her. He calls her ‘his daughter’ Why? The amazing things he is about to tell her could be life-changing, things she had never thought about.
Matica nearly jumps out of her skin at what she is told. ‘Who me?’ she questions herself. ‘Really me?’
Will Matica be able to cope with these life-changing disclosures?
In the midst of all this, the poachers are back, looking for eggs and birds – and Talon.

TALON, CONNECTED is far more than a kids' story. It is a story about growing up, friendship, and the challenge of moral choices and respect. Ride along during the ongoing adventures of Matica and her best friends, the condors Talon, Tamo and Tima, characters many readers already know and have learned to love.

Talon, Encounter (Book 5):

Synopsis:

The poachers are back – and they are looking for Talon! They are doing everything in their power to capture him, and if they can’t get him alive, will kill him. Determined to get him at all costs the poachers run up against the might and will of Tamo, Tima and Talon.
It is war. The poachers against the condors, Matica and the Indians – with the poachers even taking hostages to win the war.

With the help of Tamo and Tima, Talon and Matica do the impossible knowing they have to capture and stop the poachers or they will be back.

Between the poachers shooting at the condors, the crows playing their part, and Tamo being shot and injured, Matica goes above and beyond to help her beloved condors.

Action-packed from beginning to end, Talon Encounter will keep you on the edge of your seat.

About the Author:

Gisela (Gigi) Sedlmayer was born on 19 May 1944 in Potsdam, a suburb of Berlin in Germany.
Her family escaped to the West just before the infamous wall went up. They moved around in Germany until finally settling in Munich where Gigi studied architectural drafting and met Albert in 1965, marrying in December 1967. She worked as a civil draftsperson in various private consultancies in Munich.

Since her uncle was a writer, she tried to write short animal stories herself. Nothing further came of it, but she developed a love for the written word and started to consume books.

In May 1975, Gigi and her husband moved to New Zealand. Because of language challenges, she started a handicraft business. As a specialty, she made colourful parrots of which she sold thousands in a few years.

In 1988, they decided to adopt and became adoptive parents of twin girls the year after. They lived in New Zealand for eighteen years and moved to Australia in September 1992.

Two years later Gigi was diagnosed with cancer. After operations and radiation, she withdrew, thinking that she would probably soon be dead, like her friend who died of cancer, but her two little girls gave her the courage to keep going. After a few years, still among the living, her brain started to work again, so she thought, ‘Get a grip on yourself and do something good with your life’.
She remembered the time she wrote short stories and got inspired again, seeing her husband Albert writing the story of their adoption. Her English became increasingly better so she pressed on to develop her creative writing.

Albert taught her how to use a computer and she wrote many short stories. She entered them in competitions and often got very good reports back, which gave her confidence to go on writing. One day the idea for the TALON series came to her and she spent the next several years bringing the story and the characters to life.

She now loves writing and spends most of her time at the computer, developing new story lines. She also loves traveling, 4x4 touring, swimming, gardening, handcrafting, reading, fossicking and enjoys good adventure DVD’s or going to the movies.

PROLOGUE

VIOLA
Once upon a time, in a faraway land, lived a young princess who awaited a prince who would give her everything she ever dreamed of… love, passion, loyalty. He’d be the sweetest, kindest, most heartwarming gentleman a girl could ever ask for. And he’d be perfect.
…Excuse me while I vomit.
There is absolutely, positively, no way that a man like that exists on this earth. I used to think he was, but of course, I was proven wrong. I was young and naive, and didn’t know any better.
And he was Travis King.
I remember how clear the sky was as I sat on my rooftop outside of my bedroom window. Summer was fading away and the start of my seventh grade year was right around the corner. The stars were super bright and as I counted them, I heard Travis’ father screaming from the house across from mine. He did that a lot and occasionally, I’d see Travis through the window of his bedroom. He’d put on his headphones to tune out the yelling, as if it was something to which he was accustomed. But that night he didn’t go to his bedroom. He ran out of his front door, slamming it behind him, and began pacing his front yard. I swallowed, watching him intently as his hands balled into fists at his sides.
When the Kings moved across the street from us, Travis and my older brother, Drew, instantly became best friends. They were both going into their first year of high school and I was sad I wouldn’t be at the same school as them anymore. Well, mostly about Travis. Drew had made it very clear he didn’t like his little sister tagging along, but Travis never made me feel like I was a nuisance.
As I watched him kick the dirt on the sidewalk, he looked up at me. His lips were turned down and I could see the anger in his eyes. My breath stilled as he watched me watch him, and I was certain he’d tell my brother I’d been spying on him.
Instead, he walked across the street, climbed up the trellis and sat down next to me. He stayed silent for a long while, but then he finally turned and spoke.
“I hate my dad sometimes.”
“Why does he get so mad?” I asked.
He looked away and rested his arms over his bent knees. “He drinks. Sometimes too much.”
“Does he hurt you?” He didn’t look at me. “Or your mother?”
He winced. “No. Just yells.”
We sat in silence, both lying on our backs as we looked up at the sky above us, the stars so bright and big.
“You can sit up here anytime, you know? My parents won’t mind.”
“Drew would,” he said matter-of-factly. “He’d call me a pansy.” He chuckled.
“Drew calls everyone that.”
He laughed again.
I turned my head and looked at him. “I don’t think you’re a pansy.”
Travis tilted his head and looked into my eyes and everything went serious. I watched his throat move, swallowing hard. He licked his lips and moved in close. Feeling his breath against my skin made me so nervous, I instinctively turned my head.
“Are you excited about going into high school?” I spit out, trying to change the subject, looking back up at the stars. I could’ve sworn Travis was about to kiss me. It would’ve been my first kiss.
Moments passed and he finally responded. “Yeah, I guess. It’ll be nice getting back into basketball season and staying late for practices and games.”
I knew what he was implying without saying the words. Less time at home.
“Why do you think she puts up with it?” Curiosity got the best of me, and I could no longer keep it in. “Can’t she leave him?” I asked.
He shrugged. I supposed it wasn’t that simple for adults, but to me it just sounded like common sense. Why would anyone want to be with someone that treated them like crap?
That wasn’t the last time Travis snuck up the rooftop and sat with me under the stars. We shared details with each other that we hadn’t shared with anyone else before. It was our secret little spot where we could talk or just sit and stare up at the sky.
It was easy.
He wasn’t my brother’s best friend.
I wasn’t his best friend’s little sister.
And the lines between us weren’t blurred.
I was only twelve years old, so I truly believed prince charming existed. As I grew older, I came to realize he never really did. Because if he did, he most certainly wouldn’t be available. And he most definitely wouldn’t be interested in a girl like me. I’m not saying that because I want anyone to tell me otherwise, but if such a man existed, he’d have no chance with me anyway. Because for some only-God-knows-why reason, my heart only beats for one man. My pulse only increases when he walks into the room. My cheeks flush and my body hums when he looks at me. I feel the blood in my veins as my skin heats from his very existence. He’s the epitome of perfection.
…Too bad a decade later, he’s a complete asshole.
Travis King.
He’s no knight in shining armor; more like a royal jackass. He may look like a prince on the outside, but on the inside he’s a cocky, arrogant womanizer that I want to shove over a cliff.
All right, that might sound dramatic and all, considering I just confessed my feelings about him, but those are feelings of hate…not love.
From being head over heels for him as a young girl to loathing him as a woman, Travis King needs to remember the golden rule—never admit defeat.
It was game on.

Review:

Heart on FireHeart on Fire by Brandy L. Rivers
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author for an honest review.

This is the first book in the Combustible contemporary romance series. I loved it!

Mila Day is a wonderful character. I like her but she has a nasty habit of not seeing herself as others see her and constantly belittles herself. Whether this is because of her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, I am not sure. However, after breaking up with him, she decides to live on the wild side for one night and has a one night stand with "The Phantom of the Opera" at a costume party. That one night changes her life forever. Moving to a new town with her daughter six years later, she meets her charming new neighbour, Kyle Blake.

Kyle Blake is also a wonderful character. I liked him a lot. He is kind, considerate and loving. It also doesn't hurt that he's a fireman. Who doesn't love a man in uniform? When he meets his new neighbour and her daughter, he is immediately drawn to them. When Mila's past threatens to tear her family apart, Kyle will do everything he can to keep them together.

Having previously read paranormal romances written by this author, I was eager to read this contemporary romance. I started to read this book and quickly became hooked. The story is told through the eyes of both Mila and Kyle, which allowed me to see what they were both thinking and feeling. I found myself on a roller coaster of emotion from beginning to end. I am a sucker for contemporary romances with sexy firemen, so meeting Kyle's friends and colleagues was a thrill too. I also fell in love with Mila's daughter, Cherish. She is so cute and lovable.

This story felt a little predictable as it followed the traditional romantic theme, but there's a lot of heat between the main protagonists which made up for it. The characters themselves felt lifelike and likable. I love flawed characters like Mila, as they come alive on the page. However, I think Kyle could have had a few more flaws as he felt a little too perfect to me. But, then again, what do I know? Other readers may think he is better without them. I'll leave you to make up your own mind.

I reached the end of the book (which doesn't end in a cliffhanger) and was left with a happy, satisfied feeling. I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Falling Star, as soon as possible.

Brandy L. Rivers has written an entertaining contemporary romance series. I love her fast paced writing style, and the flow is wonderful. Her characters are lifelike and likable. With her ability to write in both the paranormal and contemporary romance genres, she is one of my go to authors when I'm in the mood for a sexy read.

Due to explicit scenes of a sexual nature, as well as use of bad language, I do not recommend this book to readers under the age of 18. However, I do recommend this book if you love hot erotic contemporary romances full of sexy firemen and determined women. - Lynn Worton

Review:

Merlin's Vow (The Camelot Inheritance #3)Merlin's Vow by Rosie Morgan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the third book in The Camelot Inheritance Series for middle grade children that takes the myths and legends of Arthur (that's King Arthur to you!) and gives it a modern twist. I loved it!

Arthur Penhaligon is a fantastic character. He is a young man with an amazing destiny - he is a Guardian of Cornwall. I really liked this character when I first met him in The Golden Sword. He has done a bit of growing up over the year or so since he found out he was a guardian, but there is still danger lurking, and Arthur and his friends, Nick, Gawain and Tamar, are in for another adventure.

This is a fantastic adventure series set in Cornwall, England. I have been eagerly waiting for this story, because I wanted to know what the intrepid quartet had been up to since the end of the second book, The Time Smugglers.

This tale is told from several different points of view, which I found most interesting, and kept me hooked from the first page. This time, the tale is told mainly through the eyes of Tamar and Nick rather than Arthur and I was quickly swept back into their lives. We are also introduced to Rozen, a young girl who has a destiny tied to the others. There are a few characters from the other books that make another appearance, mainly the Watcher's and the Writer. These are enigmatic characters that bring their own kind of intrigue to the tale. Why are they watching? Why are they recording events? These questions and more floated round my head once more. We also get to meet Merlin for the first time. He's an enigmatic character who hides many secrets. I liked him though. I will say, however, that the Ice Lady is one creepy villain and I loved to hate her. This story is a mix of adventure, myth and magic that will keep younger readers completely hooked. I didn't find this story as dark and atmospheric as the first book in the series. However, there is an emotional undertow that grabbed me and didn't let go until I'd finished the story.

Rosie Morgan has written an exciting adventure series for children. I am a huge fan. I love her writing style, which is fast paced, and I loved the way the story flowed. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series as soon as possible.

I highly recommend this story to both boys and girls in the 7 to 14 age range. However, I also recommend this book to adults if you love YA or fantasy genres. - Lynn Worton

About The Author:

Rosie Morgan has lived most of her adult life in Cornwall, the setting for 'The Golden Sword' and 'The Time Smugglers', #1 and #2 in 'The Camelot Inheritance' series.

Before writing for older children and teenagers, she had many happy years teaching some wonderful youngsters in Cornish primary schools. She has also painted on the hills of Bodmin Moor, in the woods nearby and on the beaches which frame Cornwall.

The illustrated versions of both books will be available in paperback and kindle format during 2014, because now Rosie is combining her art training with her writing.

However the third book in the series will not be neglected, even now it's taking shape; Arthur and his friends won't be inactive for long.

Rosie loves cats, throwing parties, really dark chocolate, the Eden Project and her family.
-Not necessarily in that order.

For centuries the war that has raged within magic has ripped the world apart. Fought between Skȓítek and Trpaslík; killing father and son, and destroying a fragile balance between mortal and magic.

For centuries everyone has been awaiting the Silnỳ, searching for the girl who was prophesized. The girl with power strong enough to defeat the evil that plagued the world, and bring the war to an end.

For centuries, everyone was wrong.

The Silnỳ was not what they had been told, the promises of future distorted by a sight that was tarnished.

The evil was not what they had expected, not what they had been fighting against. Instead it was hidden amongst them; plotting, waiting for their time to strike.

And it did. With fire and blade the hidden evil took it's place upon a throne of blood. The evil has shown itself and now only one person can save them all.

But with Sights that are no longer infallible and armies that are abandoning their king - it is no longer clear who that person is, or even if they have the courage to stand up to the evil and face their end.

Crown of Cinders Teasers

One liners:

“Hide. Run. Before it’s too late.”

“Take your own advice, Ilyan: regret nothing. We both should have learned that long ago.”

“With the tiniest flick of my wrist, I let another drop fall onto his palm. The burning hissing beyond the silence before his scream rent the air.”

“My stomach tightened further. The look on his face did not give me much confidence for what was coming.”

“How am I expected to think straight if you refuse to remove your feet from my face?”

“You don’t even wear your battle scars well. All that magic and you are still left wanting.”

Paragraph teasers:

“Ovailia said nothing before turning away, her hair swinging down her bare back, revealing the scar that had been opened and reopened, both at my expense.
“You don’t even wear your battle scars well. All that magic and you are still left wanting.”
She didn’t turn, didn’t reply. Still, I could still feel the heat of her anger, her magic as strong as the intensity of the volatile flames.
