Book Review of Birthright (Shepherd's Moon Saga) by J. Anne Fullerton

Blurb:

Heritage has its price.

For centuries, werewolves have been condemned to live in the shadows. Now, in a Victorian world of steam machines and gas lights, sheep farmer Nick Buchanan unwittingly finds himself married to a werewolf. His new wife Agatha only wanted to escape a life of torment, not realizing that a greater destiny was her birthright. They will have to overcome one werewolf’s legacy and the madness of another to keep Australia from being thrown to the wolves. In sickness and in health, for better or worse, they are on the road to redemption for all werewolves.

“Birthright is an epic tribute to werewolves everywhere. It will change your mind about them being mere monsters.”

—Verdine Daniels, editor kulturmag.co.za

Review:

Birthright (Shepherd's Moon Saga, book #1)Birthright by J. Anne Fullerton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is most definitely a saga! I loved it!

Nick Buchanan is a sheep farmer, living on the outskirts of Sydney. He is a rather taciturn man, who works very hard for his living. I liked this character very much, as he is honest, a firm but fair boss, and a really likeable man. Looking for a wife, he meets Agatha, but little does he know what he is letting himself in for!

Agatha Whistleton is an American, and a werewolf called a Birthright. She is a wonderful character, who has managed to survive some terrible conditions. She has come to Australia to make a new life for herself. Marrying a stranger may be her only salvation.

I started reading this book, and struggled to put it down! This is a unique look at werewolves living in Victorian Australia. I'm not sure I believe in love at first sight, but these two characters (Nick and Agatha) have a chemistry that sparks from the first moment they meet! I loved reading their different points of view, as it gave the story a definite TV film or movie feel to it. Thanks to the very descriptive prose of the author, I could "see" Australia as it was in the Victorian era. The characters come alive in this story too. This story was completely absorbing! There are two types of werewolves, Birthright (born) and Sauvages (bitten). There is one Sauvage that is extremely dangerous. His name is Dirk; he made my skin crawl!! There is a lot of action, danger and romance in this book. I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the saga, as there is a teaser at the end of the book that had me gasping for breath!

J. Anne Fullerton has written a fascinating, exciting and absorbing read! Due to some scenes of violence, and also some scenes of a sensual nature, I do not recommend this book for younger readers. I do recommend this book if you love reading action/adventure/ paranormal romances or epic sagas about werewolves. - Lynn Worton

Book Review of Humanity's Biggest Secrets by Drago De Silver

Book Description:

Drago De Silver makes a stunning debut to the publishing world with a powerful life-changing book, dealing with wonders over the centuries! Finally – the most thought-provoking questions answered! Why are we here? What is our purpose? Who is God? What is really happening beyond Earth? This explosive book contains hard-hitting facts that will transform your reality.

De Silver presents a variety of fascinating topics, giving an insight into some of humanity’s deepest secrets – past and present. Evidence shows that Adam and Eve were not the first humans on Earth, and were actually genetically engineered. If pyramids were built by Egyptians, why are pyramids discovered all over the world and even in the ocean near Japan? How were the Moon and Earth formed? Do their origins reveal something deep and dark? Why haven’t we been told of the stunning artificial changes in the formation of Saturn’s rings? Ancient scriptures from around the world tell us of a phenomenally futuristic past! This book is a must-read sensation.

This captivating book includes stunning exposure of:

• Secrets behind man’s origins and our altered solar system;
• A man and a woman co-existing in a single body;
• The race of Atlanteans as the builders of the first pyramids, and not the Egyptians;
• Secrets behind Saturn, the Moon and Mars;
• Understanding the truth about our place in the universe;
• A link between ancient history and the subconscious mind;
• The history of our Third-eye;
• Evidence of giants;
• Revelations behind the ancient mythologies and deities;
• Hidden messages in modern day movies;
• Hidden messages contradicting our common beliefs, from celebrities such as Michael Jackson;
• Extracts of ancient texts: Sumer, Egypt, China, India and Tibet;
• Supporting evidence from scientists, researchers, physicists and philosophers.

Review:

Humanity's Biggest SecretsHumanity's Biggest Secrets by Drago De Silver
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

I don't normally read a lot of non-fiction, as I sometimes find it a bit boring and/or text book-y. However, this book captured my attention because I am interested in aliens, ancient history and the origins of mankind.

This book explores several interesting theories. Some of them are controversial, such as God and the ancient ancestral Gods are actually aliens, and that the human race is actually genetically engineered slaves. There are also some conspiracy theories about whether there are aliens amongst us, and that the leaders of the world know that they are here. There has been a lot of research done by the author into these and other subjects that makes this book an intriguing read!
However, there was also a lot of information that I found to be a bit above my understanding, and I found myself a bit adrift. This was not the actual author's theories, but another author called Madame Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, which Drago De Silver used as part of his research. Her theories definitely gave me food for thought, but also left me with a few questions. Unfortunately, I cannot ask them of her, as she is no longer alive to answer them.
I must admit that I believe that we are not alone in the universe. Whether we are slaves to aliens, or masters of our own destiny, I cannot say. I also believe that we, the human race, are older than what our history books and science tells us. I have no proof, but I believe that man walked with the dinosaurs over 65 million years ago up until the Middle Ages (George and the dragon, anyone?). What about Nessie (the Loch Ness Monster)? I also believe that man did not evolve on this planet, but was placed here; by whom, and why, I do not know. But, it would be interesting to find out!

Drago De Silver has written a completely intriguing, and thought provoking book that I struggled to put down! His theories, although controversial, match with some of my thoughts I've had over the years. However, I do not agree with all of them. You will have to read this book for yourself to determine whether he is right or not.

I highly recommend this book if you love ancient history, conspiracy theories about aliens and the origins of mankind. - Lynn Worton

Scary Stories with Twist Endings Vol 1Scary Stories with Twist Endings Vol 1 by John M.W. Smith
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

Having previously read Wacky Stories With Twist Endings by the same author, I was looking forward to reading these scary stories.

This book contains eight short stories. Each story is well written, and contain moments of humour and/or horror. Unfortunately, I did not find them particularly scary. Yes, some of them were macabre, and there were definitely twists to the endings on all of them, but there was nothing that made me want to hide behind the sofa. I did find them to be a highly entertaining read, don't get me wrong! I have the utmost respect for this author, and do not mean any offence. I cannot put my finger on why these stories weren't scary for me. Perhaps it's because I have read some really chilling horror stories in the past, or it's because I'm not easily scared. However, as I have said, I did enjoy reading this book and I would definitely read more of this author's work in the future.

John M.W. Smith has written a fantastic anthology that thoroughly entertained me. I'm just sorry that I didn't find them scary! I do not recommend this book for younger readers due to there being some gruesome scenes, but I recommend this book if you are looking for a quick, entertaining and scary read! - Lynn Worton

Beyond the world you see lies a hidden realm, the Mythrian Realm, inhabited by all of the creatures you've been told are mere fiction. Only one thing lies between humans and the truth: the Nexus. A magical barrier erected millennia ago to separate the two realms, it has stood the test of time. Until now.

For Mythrian Sha Phoenix, magic is nothing new. But when she stumbles upon a portal on the verge of collapse, her fate will forever change. Pulled through the portal into the Human Realm, she lands in the middle of Detective Connor Flynn’s brutal murder scene. Book Review of Cry of The Wolf (Eye of the Storm #2) by Dianna Hardy

Book Review of Cry of the Wolf by Dianna Hardy

Synopsis:
The full moon is a week away, and although Lydia is as excited as it gets to run as a wolf for the first time, she is also fighting to keep her independence while trying to understand her role in the lives of the three males that have come to rule hers: compassionate, tender Taylor; impetuous, fun-loving Ryan and distant, cold Lawrence.

There's also a fourth man in Lydia's life. Brendan, her previous "friend with benefits", is tirelessly searching for her. He's about to uncover things that should be kept hidden.

However, the testosterone surrounding her is the last thing she should be worrying about. Her family bear truths about her heritage she's not ready to face ... she may not have a choice, because the greatest danger to them all comes from within. The past never stays buried for long, and among the shadows of their species it is rising with a vengeance, threatening to tear their pack apart for good.

Notes: This is book two of a series - it is highly recommended that book one be read first. This is an adult, paranormal fantasy short novel (over 55,000 words) containing scenes of explicit sexual content and some violence, entwined with romantic elements. (Written in British English.)

Cry Of The Wolf (Eye Of The Storm, #2)Cry Of The Wolf by Dianna Hardy
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the second book in the Eye Of The Storm Series. I loved it!

Lydia is a fantastic character! She is adjusting to her new life within the wolf pack. Being mated to three very different men has it's challenges. I enjoyed watching Lydia grow into her new life.

Taylor is sweet and tender. I love his protectiveness and caring of Lydia, even though he's still in love with his wife, Sarah.

Ryan is fun-loving and spontaneous. He's not as involved in this story, but I loved his method of having a "man talk" with Taylor. It made me smile!

Lawrence is intense and serious. I loved getting to know this enigmatic character a bit more. His story is very emotive, and I shed a few tears as I read it.

I have been looking forward to reading this story since I had read the first book. I started reading this book, and struggled to put it down! We meet new characters too; Sarah (Taylor's wife) and Amil. These characters add a new dimension to an already intriguing storyline. I'm not sure where Amil will fit in, in the next book, but I'm looking forward to finding out! I loved the way the story flowed, and was shocked at a major twist that had me thinking, "Huh?, what's going on?!". As this is a paranormal romance, there are a few scenes of a sensual nature that are explicit and HOT! I am now looking forward to reading the next instalment in the series!

Dianna Hardy has written an amazing paranormal romance series that is extremely fast paced, but it doesn't feel rushed. I was disappointed when I came to the end of the story, because I wanted to find out what happens next! I HATE cliffhangers! (However, I love them too!). This author is on my favourite authors list, and I will read any book written by her.

Due to the sensual content and some bad language, I do not recommend this book for younger readers. However, I highly recommend this book if you love paranormal romances with sexy werewolves. - Lynn Worton

Blog Tour & Excerpt - The Devil Knows by K.C. Cavanaugh

Today I have pleasure in hosting K.C. Cavanaugh, author of The Devil Knows during her blog tour.  Please give her a warm welcome!

Blurb:

Megan has met her soulmate, her eternal love. The problem is, he is immortal. Not only that, he is a minion of the Devil sent to steal her soul by using her desire to save her best friend from death. Jeremiah, a real devil of a man, is truely in love with Megan. But his work with the Devil requires him to ask the immortal question, "What would you give to save a life?" A better question might be, "What would you give to save a love?" Eternal love and mortals, those words are not something that go hand in hand. By definition eternal love is, well, it's eternal and mortals are so fragile and break so easy. How can something that can die so easily ever really know eternal love? And how can something damned to eternal life ever know love at all? This breakout novel from K.C. Cavanaugh, delivers a vibrant tale of eternal love and imortal torment with clarity, fire, sorrow, and joy. ________________ "Couldn't put it down. K.C. Cavanaugh reminds me of a Gothic Nicholas Sparks." C. Jeff Oakes, Author of Survive and Thrive

ABOUT THE BOOK:
“The Devil Knows” is a paranormal romance-drama. It starts off with Megan learning that her best friend since birth has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Megan’s life is then consumed by the drive to find a way to save Anya. She scours the internet looking for medical answers, as well as those that seem far-fetched and impossible.
            Soon, her computer leads her to the possibility of making a deal with the devil. Megan wonders if it’s even possible for her to give up her soul to save Anya. Not knowing where to begin, she soon discovers clues and signs that seem to be left for her, which leads her to an occult shop where she tries to find some answers.
            But it doesn’t take long for Anya to get worse, as it seems each day her condition deteriorates. Even the doctors are baffled by the progression of the cancer, as it’s much more aggressive than anticipated. During a trip to the emergency room with Anya, Megan meets Dr. Carson who is Anya’s attending physician.
            Quickly a spark between Megan and the doctor ignites, even though there appears to be something that just isn’t right about the emergency room doctor. Besides he treated Anya, so that makes Megan feels weird. Plus there is the fact that she’s been thinking about selling her soul, so a relationship is the last thing on Megan’s mind! But after a few encounters, Megan realizes that Jeremiah Carson may not be exactly who he has portrayed himself to be.
            Who holds the answers to curing Anya? Could Megan really sell her soul when it comes down to it? Only the devil knows…

Excerpt One:
"Are they talking about admitting her?" Megan asked, trying to keep the horror out of her voice. From their conversations the doctors hadn't thought hospitalization would be necessary and she could receive her chemo as an outpatient. If the emergency room doctors were considering hospitalization for anything other than dehydration and nausea, then Anya was not in good shape. If so, all the optimism and perky tones in the world wouldn't do her any good.
"I don't know," Bryan repeated, clearly frustrated. "I don't think the doctors know!"
"Okay, okay," Megan said, trying to calm Bryan down. "I'll be there soon. Let her know, okay?"
"Yeah," he said weakly and mumbled that he needed to go and he'd see her soon.
The phone clicked, signaling the call was disconnected and Megan had to fight the urge to put her head back and close her eyes as she merged onto the interstate. Thankfully the rush hour traffic was dissipating.
Minutes later Megan was maneuvering through downtown, silently cursing every red light. She had been able to see the hospital since she exited the interstate and was anxious to reach her destination.
Finally, the light turned and car in front of her rolled through the intersection. Megan made her right turn into the hospital parking garage and felt her pulse begin to race.
It wasn't fear of being too late, but the fear the unknown. Having just seen Anya earlier, Megan wasn't sure what kind of state her best friend was going to be in.
The parking garage was across the street from the hospital and Megan collected the ticket so she could proceed further into the underbelly of the garage and begin her hunt for a space.
Parking was a nightmare—almost as bad as the ones she had been suffering at night. She reached the third level before she found a parking spot in a distant corner of the garage. She quickly trotted to the elevator, waited for what felt like hours, and wrote it down to street level.

Excerpt Two:
“So, that doctor was pretty cute, huh?” Anya asked, teasing.
Snorting, Megan retorted, “Oh yeah, a real hottie.” But in the back of her mind, she was drooling over the good doctor. He wasn’t bad to look at, Megan had to admit. Though he didn’t do anything to warrant the opinion, she got the impression he could be intense.
“He seemed to think the same about you,” Anya replied.
“Anya! He was there as your doctor, not to pick up girls.”  Megan couldn’t believe Anya’s playful mood. She never teased Megan about guys—well, hardly ever.  “Look, I have too much on my plate right now with school. I’m not looking for anything,” she said, trying to figure out if she was trying to convince Anya, or herself.
“Who said you have to be looking for something, Megs? He’s hot, you’re hot, and the two of you could be hot.”
The look Anya was giving her made Megan burst out in laughter. This was good. She liked having this happy, clever Anya around. It was how Megan wanted to remember her.

Book Review of Nature Calls by Bonnie Bernard

“Nature Calls” is a 40,000 word anthology of fourteen short stories revolving around the idea, “If Mother Nature and Sister Karma whipped up a cauldron of ‘Double, double toil and trouble’ soup, this might be the result.” From ghosts to goblins to three-legged, one eyed Pomeranians, Nature Calls offers something for everybody who looks at life through cock-eyed glasses. Warning…you may never enter the woods or an outhouse the same way again.

This is a fantastic anthology of fourteen short paranormal stories! I loved them!

Every story in this anthology is entertaining, and some of them have a twist that were either surprising, or left me wanting more!
It is extremely difficult for me to say which story I enjoyed more, as I loved them all. However, I must admit that When Yeti Met The Space Alien, When Yeti Met The Demon, Transportal Potty and The Ricki Shay Effect may just be on the top of my list. All of the stories are witty, and made me giggle in varying degrees. I especially loved the Yeti meeting Howie Evil in When Yeti Met The Demon. I'm a HUGE Howie Evil fan! However, he'll just call me a "stupid human". If you haven't read Bonnie Bernard's other books, The Midnight Hunter Trilogy, then the reference will be lost on you. Therefore, I HIGHLY recommend you read those books, because then you'll know exactly what I am talking about! Howie Evil HATE'S humans! His meeting with the Yeti had me giggling like mad, because I could "see" the scene in my mind as if it was real.

Bonnie Bernard is one of my favourite authors, and I am looking forward to reading more of her books in the future. I love her sense of humour, which is somewhat macabre, but her wit is dry and highly entertaining! Her writing style is fast paced, and the flow is exceptional; Exceptional, because it takes a 90 degree turn just when you don't expect one!

I highly recommend this as a MUST READ, but due to some of the scenes being a bit dark, I do not recommend this book for younger readers. - Lynn Worton

Celeste Garrett has finally found a happy balance in her life as the Chosen One, thanks in large part to a certain hunky Irishman. But if there’s any lesson she should heed since receiving her calling it’s that everything can change in the blink of an eye. Soon a terrible new threat, unlike anything she’s ever encountered, causes her to make a gut-wrenching choice that will strip her of someone she holds dear.

As much as she’d like to have a pity party for one, there’s no time for that now because wedding bells are ringing in Gainesboro! In between dress fittings and rehearsal dinners Celeste will have to fend off attacking demons and leering pirates. As if the Dark Army wasn’t scary enough our heroine is faced with the horrifying trauma of attending a bachelorette party with her mom and watching Grams do Jello shots. Is a walk down the aisle even possible for a member of the Garrett family when the Dark Army is out to destroy them? More importantly, will the Dark Army Glee Club sing at the reception?

Raise your glass to the happy couple, and get ready for a wedding…Conduit-style.

Excerpt:

As soon as his hand closed around the cup, I snatched mine away. We couldn't have any lingering touches that might add credibility to Sophia’s claims.
Rowan’s flaxen brows lowered and one side of his mouth pulled back in amusement. “Much appreciation for the drink, lass.”
I shoved the keys into the pocket of my khaki work pants. “Okay look, I accept that you were a pirate a few centuries ago, but I'm not buying the lingo. Truth be told I think you force it.”
He cocked his head to the side and peered at me from behind his sunglasses. “Well, aren't you a treat today. I'm inclined not to share my little gift if you’re going to be nasty.”
Panic churned my stomach at the idea of going the rest of the day without a moment’s relief. “Sorry,” I murmured and scuffed my tennis shoe against the pavement. “Rough day.”
“Then let’s get this over with quickly.” He took a quick swig of his drink and wiped his mouth on the back of his hand. “Before you feel the need to tell me about it.”
 I shot him a glare that he ignored as he reached out and caught my hand.
“What are you doing?” Mild hysteria morphed my voice into a high-pitched squawk and I ripped my hand out of his grasp.
His eyebrows nearly shot off his head. He kept his voice low and even as he tried to break through my fog of crazy. “You remember how this works, yes? I have to touch you if you want me to work my magic. Or, you can continue to act like a loon, in which case I’ll scamper meself off and leave you to that.”
“You grabbed my hand. There’s … meaning behind that.” My cheeks and ears burned bright red. “I just don’t want anything to be misconstrued here.”
A wry smirk curled its way across his lips. “That’s what you’re worried about? What other people think?” Before I could answer he smacked his hand down on my face. His palm mashed my nose to the side. “What about this? Could this be misconstrued in anyway?”
“I hate you,” I muttered from behind his hand.
“Yeah, I'm not your biggest fan either,” he grumbled.
