Book Review of Genevieve - A Witchblood Story (Witchblood Series) by Emma Mills

Synopsis:

Paris, France 1793

Growing up in the court of King Louis XVI, Genevieve enjoys a sheltered privileged life with the gardens of Versailles as her playground, until on the eve of her nineteenth birthday, the king is executed and all hell breaks loose.

As family members and close friends fall prey to the Revolution, Genevieve turns to the one man who promises to help her; the shadowy figure in court, and friend to the elder brother that betrayed them all, but is Sebastian worthy of her trust or will he too betray her?

Genevieve has a choice to make, one that will change her life forever. Go it alone and try to escape the murderous streets of Paris, or join Sebastian, forget her nightmares and start a new life… an immortal life?

This is a novelette or short story of approximately 50 pages telling the story of Eva's beginning.

Review:

'Genevieve' - A Witchblood Novelette'Genevieve' - A Witchblood Novelette by Emma Mills
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

This is the fourth book in the Witchblood Series, but it is a novelette and not a novel. I loved it!

First off, I would like to say that I LOVE the cover! It's quite striking!

Genevieve is a fascinating character. I really liked her when I first met her as Eva in Witchblood (Book 1 of the series). She is not focused on much in that book, so reading this novelette brought her to life more. I loved her independent streak, even though the time she lived in frowned on such forward thinking in their women!

This novelette, although short, has a wealth of descriptive text woven into a compelling tale of one woman's attempt to survive against the odds. I was a bit surprised at how willingly Genevieve accepted being turned into a vampire. Although, after giving it some thought, I suppose the alternative (death) was less appealing! I was also a bit unsure of Sebastian and his motives at first, but realised that he loved Genevieve and wanted to look after her. I still don't like his character though, and I cannot explain why. It's just a feeling I have after reading the other books.

Emma Mills has written another page turner! I was a bit disappointed when I reached the end of the book though; I felt it could have been a bit longer! I am now looking forward to reading any books by this author in the future.

I highly recommend this book if you love YA or paranormal romance. - Lynn Worton

Book Review of Keeping Never (Never Say Never Trilogy #3) by C.M. Stunich

Synopsis:

Keeping Never, a New Adult Novel Recommended for Ages 18 and Up
Never say Never Trilogy: Book Three. Book One, Tasting Never, and Book Two, Finding Never, are both a
vailable now!

“In your pain, I see my own, so I'm going to tell you and only you, okay?”

Never's past might be under control, but Ty's is just starting to unravel. After receiving a phone call from his broken past, tensions run high between Never and Ty, especially with Never deciding to do something she's never done and keep her pregnancy a secret.

While visiting the skeletons in his dark, dark closet, Ty is threatened by all that he once was and all that he thought he'd overcome. With his pain about to consume him, Never is the only one who stands between Ty and relapse, who can help him control his emotions and find peace, but is she up to it? After all, with two tortured souls desperate for a healing touch, are they more of a hindrance to one another than a help?

Love, marriage, and a baby. Three things that Ty and Never didn't see coming. It's judgment time for both of them, time to see if the light really can overcome the dark. Here's to hoping.

“I know you'll make the right decision, no matter how hard it is, no matter if it cuts you into pieces, because you have to believe that I'll be there for you in the end.”

KEEPING NEVER EXCERPT:

Ty enters the bathroom, and I turn my head forward, back towards the large, gray seat in front of me, determined not to give myself away by acting too anxiously. After all, I've seen one too many horrible scenarios in movies regarding the infamous Mile High Club. I suppose now I'll get to find out if it's really a reality or if Ty's just sh*tting with me. I want to erase his pain, though, give him something else to occupy his mind for a little while. After all, he did the same for me on the bus, took something that used to be my weakness, twisted it around so that it was not only a distraction technique but a bonding exercise that drew the two of us together in ways that I can still barely understand. For so, so long, sex was just this thing, this dangerous activity with physical and emotional consequences that I ignored in desperation, wildly fighting to fill that emptiness inside of myself. Now, my feelings for Ty and my family sit there and make my heart tight with love, and sex has become … something else. It's just pleasure and not pain, another way for me to show Ty how I feel and vice versa, a stress reliever, exercise, relaxation … It's all of those things and more. It's something for him and me alone, just the two of us. Just us. Us, us, us.

Review:

Keeping Never (Never Say Never, #3)Keeping Never by C.M. Stunich
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the third and final book in the trilogy. I loved it!

Never Ross is a fantastic character. She has come a long way since the first book, Taking Never. I love her sassy attitude, which hides a vulnerability - fear of being hurt. Keeping her pregnancy a secret from Ty is becoming harder. Just as she's about to tell him, a phone call changes everything.

Ty McCabe is also a fantastic character. He too carries baggage from a past he would rather forget. Meeting Never, and falling in love, has changed him for the better. He too has a vulnerability hidden under his attitude, but a phone call brings his past back to haunt him. Can he find peace?

The first two books were focused on Never, and her issues with her family. This book focuses on Ty and a past he is trying to forget. I was completely hooked (again!) from the first page and couldn't put it down! I was extremely touched with this story, as I knew that Ty's background was not a happy one. What amazes me about his character is that, although the experiences he had were deeply disturbing, he wasn't bitter; Angry, yes. However, he managed to get out when he could.
I think that if Ty was a real person, and not a character in a book, I would probably fall in love with him myself. However, I think Never would have something to say to that! Their feelings for each other are extremely deep and intense. It fairly rolls off the pages in waves! I am happy that I got to meet these characters, as they are very lifelike and likeable. I am sorry that their story is over, but I wish them all the best, and that they never say never!

C.M. Stunich has done it again! I don't know how she manages to impart so much emotion through the written word! I was in tears in places at one moment, and sniggering at a snarky comment from Never in the next! She is a wonderful author, and I will read any future books of hers with pleasure!

As this book contains scenes of a sensual nature and has bad language, I do not recommend this book to younger readers. However, I highly recommend this book (and series) if you love older YA or New Adult genres. - Lynn Worton

Review:

The Killing TimesThe Killing Times by Morgan Kelley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A friend recommended this book to me. I would like to thank her, because it is fantastic! Thank you K.C. - I loved it!

Elizabeth LaRue is a fantastic character. She is a dedicated law enforcement officer, who has taken up her father's position as Sheriff in her home town after his death. She is extremely methodical, and uses her training as a former FBI agent to good effect. Unfortunately, she also tends to be stubborn, but when several people go missing and the bodies start piling up, she has no choice to call in for assistance.

Ethan Blackhawk is an FBI agent who tends to bend the rules, if not break them completely. I loved his character! He's a rebel with a cause! He's super sexy, but he doesn't seem to realise his appeal to the opposite sex. After skating too close to the edge once more, he is sent, with his partner, to assist the Sheriff in trying to find the killer or killers in the town of Salem.

This is a fantastic romantic thriller! I struggled to put it down! Unfortunately, I had to do so often, and was extremely annoyed because of it! I was hooked from the first page! The suspense and mystery of who the killer was, and why they did what they did was woven into an amazing story filled with twists and turns. These twists sometimes led to red herrings that had me wondering about several of the characters. Were they involved?
This story is mostly told from Elizabeth and Ethan's points of view, but there are also a few other characters that have their say. This gives the book a movie-like feel. In fact, I could see this being made into a TV movie with no problem. The characters, locations and the situations all came alive for me. The romance between Elizabeth and Ethan was HOT and STEAMY! Their chemistry literally smouldered on the page! The scenes were somewhat explicit, but not erotic.
The killer was a complete surprise! I did suspect a certain person, and they were involved, but I should have read enough murder mysteries by now to expect the unexpected! However, I sure didn't see this one coming!

Morgan Kelley has written an exciting romantic thriller that flowed beautifully! It was fast paced, but not rushed. I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Sacred Burial Grounds.

Due to the violence and sexual content, I do not recommend this book for younger readers. However, I highly recommend this book if you love murder mysteries/thrillers/suspense or romantic thrillers. - Lynn Worton

Blog Tour: Book Promo and Excerpt - Lost And Found by Nicolette Grey

Today, I am pleased to have Nicolette Grey, author of Lost and Found on my blog whilst she is on her blog tour.  Please make her feel welcome!

Blurb:

Life comes with its share of losses. In these four novelettes of erotic romance by Nicolette Grey it takes on different forms. “Moving Violations” deals with the loss of freedom and a special dream. “Lost Canyon” begins with the death of a beloved family member in a harsh and foreign environment. In “Time and a Half…Plus Benefits”, the heroine must learn to cope with her low sense of self-esteem after a failed relationship, and “Windswept Beach” portrays a crumbling marriage with the hurts and frustrations that accompany it.
Although each story in this book is unique, they all share the same initial undercurrent of loss as well as the “founding” aspect that brings their heroines through their trials, intact and stronger - love.

LOST & FOUND …the losses we endure with the happy endings we strive for, from Nicolette Grey and Hot Ink Press - because love should never be boring!

Excerpts

From “Moving Violations” (Book 1 in LOST AND FOUND)

Bobby Lee stared out the window. He wouldn't meet her eyes as their driver opened the door and pulled him to his feet. “All right now, folks, here’s what we’re going to do. Bobby Lee, I'm going to un-cuff you. Go to the front desk of the Sandpiper Motel across the street and ring the bell. When the girl comes, get us a room. And, Bobby Lee? Remember what I told you – as long as y’all do what I say, you’ll both be fine.”
“Let me see your badge,” Georgia Rae insisted as cold fingers of panic gripped her gut. “You’re way out of line, here.”
The cop removed his hat and ran a large hand through his hair.  Unbuttoning the shirt of his uniform, he removed it and draped it across the seat. Beneath the blue and gray, he was wearing a plain white t-shirt. “Do I need to remind you about Spindrift Drive?” he said in his slow southern drawl.
Georgia Rae swallowed hard. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
He chuckled and ran a finger across her cheek. “You and your boyfriend are thieves. I caught you red-handed, so I suggest you shut the hell up.”
“Or what?”
“Jail. Breaking and Entering’s a Class H felony. Let’s see - that’s four to twenty-five years, I believe. Now, are you going to behave, or do I have to run you in?”
Georgia Rae slumped in the seat staring at her bound hands. Her dreams of California evaporated before her eyes.

From “Lost Canyon” (Book 2. in LOST AND FOUND)

Cecilia stepped from the wagon as they entered the dust-strewn town of Lost Canyon and turned to her father with a weary shake of her head.
“Are we there, yet?”
“Not quite, darlin’.” Wayne Tibbits’ voice was terse as he wiped the sweat from his brow. He softened the disappointing news with a brief upturn of his chapped lips and pointed ahead to the distant mountains. “All we've got left is the Bighorn Mountains – once we’re over them, we’re home.”
She sighed and lifted her petticoats as she stepped over the muddy ruts left from another wagon of travelers headed west. “How many more days?”
Her father looked to the sky and frowned. “Ten’s my guess, if the weather holds. Don’t reckon it will, though. Not from the looks of those clouds overhead.” He patted the seat beside him. “Climb back up and wait here. I’ll ask at the saloon about a place where we can camp tonight - someplace with water and good grass for the horses.”
Cecilia returned to the wagon and hauled herself up. “This is Indian territory. Don’t you think we’d be better off staying within the town limits?”

From “Time And A Half…Plus Benefits” (Book 3. In LOST AND FOUND)

“William!”
The screech came from an upper window out of which Trulee Hightower leaned, frowning fiercely. “I’m not paying you to stand around talking! Start unloading! I want everything marked with an orange sticker to come in first.”
“Gotcha, boss,” Will shouted.  Turning to Missy he whispered, “I told you so.”
From the back of the truck, Matt indicated a large walnut dresser. “Let’s get that one out of the way, Willy Boy. With any luck this’ll go smoothly and we’ll be done early.”
“You’re not driving back to New York tonight, are you?” Missy asked.
“Nope,” Will said, rolling his eyes. “Matt’s an eternal optimist. The way Trulee operates, it’ll take at least two days to unload this shit and get it set up. The Twoomeys sprung for hotel rooms for the whole crew for the night. Us included. The soonest we’ll be leaving is tomorrow afternoon.”
“Why?” Matt said, turning to her with a sly grin. “Got something in mind?”
Missy felt heat flood her cheeks and shook her head. Ignoring the flutter in her belly, she headed for her car.

From “Windswept Beach” (Book 4. in LOST AND FOUND)

“Well, finally! It’s about time you two showed up!”
Anna’s eyes traveled up the path to the front porch and settled on the voice’s owner, a tall man with dark hair, muscular build, and wide grin. He waved when he caught her eye and took a sip from the plastic glass he held in his hand.
“Hi Bruce,” she called, forcing a smile. “Good to see you.”
In ten steps he was across the yard and standing in the driveway. Anna found herself engulfed in a bear hug as the big man turned to clap Carter’s hand. “Hey, stranger! Meredith and I figured you missed your plane. We were just about to take your room.”
“Our flight was late leaving Atlanta so we missed our connection in Nassau,” Anna said, disentangling herself from his embrace. “Luckily, they had room for us on the next plane out.”
Carter dropped his suitcase at his feet and turned to greet his old college roommate properly, with a mock tackle courtesy of their old college football days. “Later’s better than never,” he said, landing on his back. He dusted himself off as Bruce helped him to his feet. “Good to see you, man.”

Smashwords

Gripping new fantasy novel set in Cambridge launched in May

The first ever young adult fantasy novel to be set in the historic city of Cambridge is now available!

Sentinel is the first instalment in an exciting trilogy, written by debut author Joshua Winning. Joshua, 29, says: "It’s always surprised me that nobody has set a fantasy series in Cambridge before, as it’s the perfect setting for fantasy. There’s this incredible sense of time and history there; you really believe that anything could happen."
Joshua adds: "Authors often talk about settings in their books being just another character, and that’s definitely true of Sentinel. Cambridge is essential to Sentinel. It’s a city that has moods – it broods in the rain and beams in the sunshine – and it reflects the moods of the characters."

Sentinel sees the historic city beset by uncommon levels of tragedy: a train crash, a brutal attack on an innocent man, and a break-in at the Fitzwilliam Museum, which leads to another man’s death. Meanwhile, beneath the city, in a dank subterranean tomb, a red-haired woman conspires with an ancient deity. As the city is gripped in an unseasonably icy embrace, seventy-one-year-old Sam Wilkins and fifteen-year-old Nicholas Hallow embark on a treacherous journey together. But most mysterious of all is the question of who, or what, are the Sentinels?

A gripping story of grief and hope, Sentinel takes place in a world that everybody knows, but few would recognise.

“There’s just something about adding a layer of fantasy to a grounded, reality-based story,” says Joshua. “If you removed the fantasy elements from Sentinel, hopefully you would still have a gripping story about a boy who’s just lost his parents. That was my aim: to find the fantastical in the everyday and to use fantasy to magnify very real emotion."

Filled with action and mystery, Sentinel takes the reader on a whirlwind adventure with unconventional heroes and a little bit of magic. The book was released in iBook and Kindle format on Wednesday 1st May 2013.

About The Author:

Joshua, who was born in Cambridge and then later studied film in the city, is a frequent contributor to magazines including Total Film and Little White Lies. Sentinel marks a long-planned move into fiction. “I've always loved fantasy - I grew up reading Roald Dahl and Robin Jarvis, and obsessively watching Labyrinth,” says the author of his influences.

Review:

Evil Among Us Species Intervention # 6609 Book 5Evil Among Us Species Intervention # 6609 Book 5 by J.K. Accinni
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the fifth book in an amazing series! I loved it!

In the aftermath of the terrorist attack, Lorna, Jennifer and Seth are struggling to reach the Hive. They face several obstacles along the way. Meanwhile, inside the Hive, life has settled down somewhat, and Abby, Scotty, Jose, Echo, Chloe, along with Captain Cobby and his son, Kane, Peter, Ginger Mae, her daughter Daisy, Kenya, Johno, Netty, Wil and Baby, are gifted the protection of the Womb.

I found this story not as dark as the previous four books, but even so, this book has so many twists and turns I struggled to put it down! There are several revelations that shocked me, but I also found myself faced with several new questions. Such as, "What is the purpose of the Womb's delaying the birth of Kenya's baby?" and "What will the future hold for the survivors?". I am hoping that these and other questions will be answered in the sixth book, which I am now looking forward to reading! *SPOILER ALERT* I don't normally write spoilers, but in this case I have to! - I must admit that I was not sad to read about Seth's demise! He was a REALLY nasty piece of work!

On a side note: I hope that humanity will avoid anything like a nuclear war. We are the only sentient beings (that I know of!) on this planet that is causing damage to it. I am not surprised that Mother Nature is fighting back: Earthquakes, Tsunami's, Hurricanes etc. I sometimes feel that we are reaping the cosmic Karma caused by our actions and greed!

J.K. Accinni is a fantastic writer and has become one of my favourite authors. Her stories are most certainly dark, but there is compassion, and a plea to change our ways in her work. I agree with her sentiments. It is not too late, but one day it may be, and there will be no return.

I highly recommend this book (and series) if you love Sci-fi or Dystopian genres. - Lynn Worton

In His HonorIn His Honor by Crystal Cattabriga
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Review 6******

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

This is the second book of a YA Christian series written by Crystal Cattabriga. I loved it!

Bobby McCallister is a fantastic character! He is a thoughtful, loving son and I fell in love with him when I first read Saving Bobby, where he was a 12 year old with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Now, he's a strapping 18 year old, and heading to war.

This is a story that touched me very deeply. Although not as emotionally wrenching as Saving Bobby, this story still managed to have an impact. This book has Christian beliefs, but it is not preachy at all. As I don't have any close family fighting in a war that I feel is wrong, my heart goes out to all those families that do. It is the sacrifice that they (and characters like Bobby) make to keep us safe, that makes me proud of the men and women that serve their respective countries. These people are exceptional.
Bobby is no less so, even though he is fictional (or is he?). I really connected to this character, and although I am not overly religious, I respect his beliefs. As I read his story, I struggled to put this book down! In fact, I read this book in one afternoon! Bobby's journey is full of danger, but it is also filled with love. I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

Crystal Cattabriga is an amazing author! She brings her characters to life on the page! I love her writing style, which is extremely fluid and fast paced. She is one of my favourite authors, and I will read any of her books in the future.

I highly recommend this book if you love YA Christian Fiction and even if you are not religious at all. - Lynn Worton

Callen Whitefox is madly in love, just not with his fiancée. It's nothing he didn't realize from day one, because his heart always belonged to another. Backed into a corner and forced to rescue Desdemona because of a promise, he drags the people he loves into the midst of the mess. Now they're all fighting for their lives, as the lines are about to be blurred, crossed and changed forever.
Can Callen have everything he's always wanted, even if his dream woman seems just out of his reach?

The truth is seeping to the surface, and the horror is about to rear its ugly head. There is one universal theme for them all. Love can destroy or heal, depending on which side you take.

Life and love will never be the same as they all slip into the 'Deep Dark Mire'.

Deep Dark Mire Book Review By Harley Nader.

In the fourth installment of the FBI/Romance series, we find our favorite girl Elizabeth riding to the rescue of her friend Desdemona. Big changes are on the horizon for the entire family, and about to shake them all to their core.

Someone’s going to die.

Lines are crossed and blurred.

New love is forged in the mix.

Everything the family has known to be true is about to change, putting them all on another path through life. Callen Whitefox has always known who his heart belonged to in life, and the lies he told himself and the world were always a cover for what lived beneath in truth.

Now it’s all coming out, and he’s taking a step into the unknown. Will it work? Will it break the family he’s always loved and needed? Only time will tell.

Elizabeth promised to take care of the men in her life, and she’s about to take that to a whole new level. Once that line is crossed can she ever go back?

Ethan Blackhawk loves his wife. She’s his heart and soul. Now he’s faced with something that stirs his body and soul in ways he knows it shouldn’t. Can he cross that line and still remain in control?

Desdemona Adare has been running from a stalker for years. Now her sister goes missing and she runs home, breaking a promise to the man she planned on marrying… one day. Everything is tossed up in the air as her one decision changes everything and puts them on a path fate now controls. As hate and anger brews, she finds herself out of the loop and willing to break the man that she once proclaimed she loved.

There’s a killer that’s been around decades, and one that know all the family secrets and is willing to kill to keep them quite.

Wow.

Where to begin with this book. It’s a definite twist that you may or may not have seen coming.  I personally didn't see it happening at all. It’s startling at first, but gives you a glimpse into something so taboo and off the grid that you can’t help but want to know more. Everything in me said that I should be wary and turned around on this one, but it works.

Morgan Kelley took something so culturally unaccepted and made it seem… normal. I found myself thinking,  ‘Why did I find this odd to begin with?’ I won’t give out too many details, but if you read Sacred Burial Grounds and True Love Lost, you may have got an inkling of what was coming.

It works! It’s perfect and holy bejezuz. I want to be Elizabeth Blackhawk now more than ever!

If you want a crime with a twist, a relationship with a big climax (yeah, I went there) and a story that makes you want to run out and get the next book to see what happens, read Deep Dark Mire!
Trust me. It’s hot, it’s fun and it’s very Morgan Kelley.
